Your dog barks to much is a common complaint in many neighborhoods. Now your neighbors keep complaining and have threatened to call the police if your dog keeps on barking. Rest assured some steps are available that you can take to control the barking and manage to get your neighbors off of your back! Here are three tips that will help you learn how to control your dogs incessant barking.

The first tip that you can try with your dog is teaching him what the word quiet means. A lot of people will holler at the barking dog to shut up. Now this may work to some extent, but then people will wonder who you are hollering at to shut up. Quiet is also a much nicer word to use when you have guest over. Once your dog learns how to be quiet you can tell him to be quiet and he will listen to you. However, you must establish with him that you are the boss and not him!

The next tip that you can use to help break your dogs barking would be positive rewards. You can give the positive rewards to him for the times that he is not barking when he normally would be barking. While this may seem confusing at first you will want to learn this one quickly because it could save you some time. If your dog is barking and you have already taught him quiet then when he does be quiet you will want to reward this behavior with a treat or a toy or playtime. Remember a big pat on the chest will really make your dog feel happy!

The third tip that will help you with keeping your dog quiet would be obedience training. Now some people may not have time for obedience training, but you can take courses online and granted they cost money and you do not have the one on one interaction, but they can provide you with a lot of help on training your dog. He will learn how to control more than his bad barking, but also control his behavior in general and start to listen and respect you as his master.

So if your dog is barking and disturbing your peace and neighborhood then you can follow the tips given above. With a combination of all of these you will gain a loving and trusted dog that will not bark at everything that moves, but will alert you to anything out of the ordinary.

I live in Ohio with my wonderful husband and two beautiful children. I have two English Mastiff puppies, a Lab-Retriever, and a Yorkie Poo. I also have two cats who came to us as strays. I love sewing, crocheting, and managing to take care of my zoo at the house. Since I have so many pets I have a strong interest in animal issues.
